Senate President Wilton Simpson Said He Would Vote for Florida’s Constitutional Carry Bill

Florida’s road to Constitutional Carry will not be easy. The Republican Party, despite its clever PR strategy, is not the hardcore pro-Second Amendment party that it makes itself out to be.

Republican Party politicians usually drag their feet when it comes to voting for these bills and will find every excuse possible to not take proactive action.

There is some good news for pro-Second Amendment Floridians, however. Florida Governor Ron DeSantis has already indicated that he would sign Constitutional Carry into law.

In a video, Matt Collins, the Director of Legislation for Florida Gun Rights, went up to DeSantis during a reception at the Governor’s Mansion on December 3, 2021 to ask him if he supports Constitutional Carry.

DeSantis responded, “Of course.”

According to a report by Renzo Downey, the Governor’s Office said DeSantis’ comments were a “general statement.”

“The Governor cannot comment on the details of legislation that he has not seen yet,” declared Christina Pushaw, a spokeswoman for DeSantis. “Our office will be monitoring legislation throughout the process and will let you know if we have any updates to share on this topic.”

Should Florida pass this bill, it would become the 22nd Constitutional Carry state in the nation.

State Representative Anthony Sabatini has filed Constitutional Carry bill HB 103, which is this year’s version of Constitutional Carry.

Sabatini has a history of filing Constitutional Carry bills. So far, the bill has not received a vote.

Senate President Wilton Simpson has also indicated that he would back Constitutional Carry legislation if it is brought to a vote.

Simpson commented on his Constitutional Carry support on January 19, after members of the Republican Liberty Caucus said they had a meeting with the Senate President. The RLC has been one of the principled proponents of “Constitutional Carry.”

“If a constitutional carry bill gets to the Senate floor, and it’s heard on the Senate floor, I would vote yes. I would support that on the floor,” Simpson stated.

The key here is Simpson would support the legislation if it came before a vote.

The thing is that politicians ultimately follow trends and don’t want to be the trend-setter. Controversial legislation like Constitutional Carry can only be passed by establishment politicians only if enough pressure is mounted to bring it to a vote.

Politicians will say they will support said legislation under certain conditions, which is usually a way to provide cover for not acting on the legislation. Grassroots activists cannot remain complacent. They will ultimately need to proactively press legislators in the committees where Constitutional Carry is placed in.

Not doing so, will allow politicians to make these bills languish and never be brought up for a vote. It is up to grassroots activists to make sure such legislation moves within committee.

When left to their own devices, politicians will not advance pro-liberty legislation. In worst, cases they end up selling out.

Florida grassroots Second Amendment supporters would be wise to start moving now and make sure the Florida political class gets the message loud and clear that Constitutional Carry must be passed.
