The City of Boulder Passes a Slew of Gun Control Measures

Boulder, Colorado has built a reputation as one of Colorado’s bluest counties. For example, Joe Biden won Boulder County handedly by a vote of 77% to 21% in the 2020 presidential elections. It’s as blue as it gets and it has a political class who is willing to push the envelope.

On gun policy, the anti-Second Amendment Left in Boulder is particularly energetic.

For example, on June 7, 2022, the Boulder city council passed several gun control bills which included a prohibition on the possession and sale of so-called assault weapons.

Previously in 2018, Boulder passed an assault weapons ban as a response to the Parkland massacre of that same year. Though gun owners obtained a temporary victory in March 2021 when Boulder District Judge Andrew Hartman ruled that Boulder’s ban to be unconstitutional because only federal and state laws can regulate the possession, sale, and transfer of “assault weapons” and high-capacity magazines. However, the Colorado state legislature quickly passed a repeal of the state’s preemption statute, thereby allowing cities like Boulder to craft their own gun control policies.

The aforementioned measures that the Boulder City Council recently passed included a 10-round magazine limit, raising the age of firearm possession to 21, and a 10-day waiting period.

Boulder’s behavior is to be expected. It is one of the most leftist cities of a state that has become reliably blue over the past decade.

The Left is smart in recognizing the value of local political activity. These are the places where otherwise fringe movements can start building power bases. After gradually picking up wins at the local level, then a movement can grow to capture counties, house districts, Senate districts, and eventually an entire state.

Gun Control Inc. has done this masterfully in Colorado, which has borne great fruit for it in the past decade as evidenced by the state government’s embrace of universal background checks and red flag gun confiscation orders. As a result, Colorado is ranked as the 39th most gun-friendly state for gun owners according to AZ Defenders.

For the Right to make any form of progress in the Rocky Mountain on Second Amendment matters, it will need to think locally and start nullifying unconstitutional gun control laws that are passed at the state and federal level.
