If there’s one place I don’t want to find myself in unarmed, it’s a diner in downtown Atlanta at 4:00 AM. This story shows exactly why.
A security guard at a diner located at North Avenue and Peachtree Street reportedly was forced to defend himself, and other customers when a man who had been refused entry to the diner returned waving around a metal bar.
According to witnesses, the man was “extremely belligerent,” which is why police are not charging the security guard with any crime at this time.
“From my understanding, he was trying to get into the restaurant, he advanced in there one time and was rebuffed by security, he came back wielding a metal pole a second time and that’s when he was shot,” said Lt. Daniel Genson, Atlanta Homicide Commander.
“Right now, we are not classifying this as a homicide. It’s a death investigation until we get more information. We’re going to interview witnesses, interview security, pull video to make our ultimate determination on it, but it’s just a death investigation at this point,” Genson added.
You know you are in a bad neighborhood when the neighborhood diner needs an armed security guard. If that security guard had been there, and no other patrons were armed, there is no telling what an insane man with a metal bar could have done.
