Mecklenburg County Sheriff Garry McFadden is depriving lawful North Carolinians of the right to bear arms by failing to issue Pistol Purchase Permits (PPP) and Concealed Handgun Permits (CHP) within the timeframe that state law stipulates.
Pro-Second Amendment organizations have not ignored McFadden’s derelict behavior. Gun Owners of America (GOA), Gun Owners Foundation (GOF), Grassroots North Carolina (GRNC), and a number of pro-Second Amendment organizations and individuals have banded together to file a lawsuit against McFadden.
Some of these applications have been pending for over a year, which embodies the concept of a “right delayed is a right denied.”
GOA and GOF Senior Vice President Erich Pratt had this to say about the delays in permit issuances:
The decision to delay PPP and CHP issuances cannot be justified. Sheriff McFadden has no authority to suspend the right to “keep and bear arms” as it is protected by federal and state constitutions.
By refusing to process applications for both types of documents, he has made it impossible for many of his constituents to lawfully obtain handguns. And he has prohibited others from obtaining permits so they may legally use their handguns for self-defense.
North Carolina’s gun laws are not terrible but they still leave a lot to be desired as seen in Guns and Ammo magazine’s Best States for Gun Owners’ rankings which places it in 27th place.
Hopefully, this pro-Second Amendment coalition can come out on top. Petty despots like McFadden abound and they must be put in their place for their misdeeds.
